Lore & Background

Kanji was originally designed with a classic gang-style pompadour and an outlaw image symbolized by skulls, yet intended to seem nice. His two Personas are based on his visual appearance with a focus on his skeleton; the first, Take-Mikazuchi, is an imposing black robotic humanoid armed with a large lightning bolt. It evolves into Rokuten Maoh, which features a fiery motif inspired by Nobunaga Oda and unintentionally references Oda's death by incineration through flames. In Persona 4: Golden, his new Persona Take-Jizaiten resembles Rokuten Maoh but adds elaborate white armor with red flame details. Early development sketches hinted he might be a senior delinquent and musician.

In Their Own Story

Kanji first appears in Persona 4 as a bully rumored to have confronted a local biker gang. As the fourth victim sent to the TV World, his Shadow reveals his dislike for women who criticized his hobbies like sewing. After the protagonist's group saves him from the Midnight Channel, he accepts his Shadow and joins the team. In Persona 4 Arena, Kanji accidentally falls into the P-1 Grand Prix tournament in the TV World, believing it is a dream until he suspects an unknown person impersonated his Shadow. His tailoring skills, inspired by his family's textile shop, were abandoned when accused by students but later reclaimed with pride. Youichiro Omi portrayed him in the Persona 4 musical.

Reader's Guide

Kanji joins the Investigation Team after overcoming his complex regarding women and his hobbies. His Social Link, The Emperor, is signified in Persona 4: The Animation by Yu's Persona King Frost. In combat, he wields Take-Mikazuchi initially, which evolves into Rokuten Maoh for a fiery motif or Take-Jizaiten in Golden with white armor. He appears as a playable character in Persona 4 Arena, its sequel Ultimax, and the spin-offs Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth and Persona 4: Dancing All Night. In BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle, he is available as paid DLC alongside characters from RWBY and Under Night In-Birth. Voice acting varies by release: Tomokazu Seki in Japanese; Troy Baker for English in Persona 4, Golden, Arena, and the first twelve episodes of the anime; Matthew Mercer took over the rest of the anime and games from Arena Ultimax to Cross Tag Battle.
