Makoto Yuki
The silent guardian who chose to face the end of the world so others could live.
Makoto Yuki is the male protagonist of Persona 3, a role-playing game released by Atlus in 2006. Originally a silent vessel for player projection, he was given the name Makoto Yuki in the four-part animated film adaptation, while the 2023 remaster of Persona 3 Portable does not add this name as a default option in the female protagonist's route (the male protagonist's default name in P3P is 'Makoto Yuki'). Designed by Shigenori Soejima to be an ordinary youth with hidden coolness, he transfers to Gekkoukan High School in Iwatodai City as an orphan whose parents died roughly a decade prior. During the mysterious Dark Hour, a time when supernatural Shadows roam freely, he awakens the ability to summon Personas and joins classmates to form the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (S.E.E.S.). His journey is defined by his unique Wild Card ability, allowing him to wield over 150 different Personas, and his ultimate sacrifice to seal away the entity Nyx.

Lore & Background
Makoto's story begins when he returns to Iwatodai City, the place where he grew up before his parents' death roughly a decade earlier. Upon moving into the Iwatodai dorm, he discovers his ability to summon Orpheus and Thanatos after an attack by Shadows during the Dark Hour. Mitsuru Kirijo recruits him for S.E.E.S., where he is elected team leader in combat due to his possession of the Wild Card ability. This power enables him to wield multiple Personas and switch between them, granting access to over 150 different entities throughout the game. His relationships are managed through Social Links; as he bonds with others, he builds the Social Link for the Fool Arcana, symbolizing infinite possibilities. A critical turning point occurs on January 31, when his Fool link automatically transforms into the Judgement Arcana regardless of the player's choice; if the player refuses Ryoji Mochizuki's truth, the game ends early without this transformation. The narrative reveals that as a child, a Shadow known as 'Death' was sealed inside him by Aigis after she failed to defeat it. This seal allowed Death to lead Makoto to twelve greater Shadows, whose defeat created Nyx Avatar, the being that manifests to bring about the Fall.
In Their Own Story
The climax of Makoto's journey takes place on the roof of Tartarus, where S.E.E.S. battles The Appriser but fails to stop Nyx's descent. To save humanity, Makoto enters Nyx and uses the power of his accumulated Social Links to perform the 'Great Seal,' an act that costs him his own self. Following this event, Tartarus and the Dark Hour are erased from existence, and the members of S.E.E.S. lose their memories of the group, continuing school life as if nothing happened. However, Makoto miraculously appears outside Gekkoukan High School on March 5th, the day of his seniors' graduation ceremony. Retaining his memories of a promise made to meet the rest of SEES on that specific day, he spends over a month pushing himself to fulfill it despite his deteriorating health, which teammates note by observing his pale appearance. On the rooftop with Aigis, who also retains her memory, he lies down on her lap and closes his eyes. He passes away just before the rest of SEES arrives upon regaining their memories, fulfilling his promise in silence.
Reader's Guide
Players experience Makoto's journey by managing his day-to-day schedule, balancing school attendance, extracurricular activities, and time spent with classmates to strengthen Social Links. These links directly determine his combat potential. In the original release and updated versions like Persona 3 FES and Persona 3 Reload, players control the male protagonist; in Persona 3 Portable, they can choose a female counterpart named Kotone Shiomi. Makoto's voice is provided by Akira Ishida in Japanese and Yuri Lowenthal in English media, with Aleks Le voicing him specifically in the Persona 3 Reload remake. In the animated film adaptation directed by Noriaki Akitaya, the character was reworked to have a distinct personality to satisfy fans who could not choose their own name; Akitaya incorporated general fan traits to construct Yuki's speech and gestures. The director noted that the scene where Makoto summons his Persona for the first time, featuring a maniacal laugh and heavy breathing, established depth in the character design by animation director Keisuke Watabe. For the game, localization editor Yu Namba was initially concerned about Yuri Lowenthal's ability to pronounce Persona names correctly, but Lowenthal succeeded due to his love for Dungeons & Dragons.
