Akechi's design features white clothing to contrast with Joker's black scheme, along with black gloves that developers initially feared would reveal his role as a traitor. His Phantom Thief outfit includes a tengu-like mask to convey condescension and a formal look resembling an officer. His first Persona, Robin Hood, matches his "hero of justice" public image, while his second, Loki, uses dazzle camouflage similar to World War I battleships to hide its origins, symbolizing Akechi's hidden true nature. In Persona 5 Royal, he gains Hereward as his Ultimate Persona during the third semester. The character is a reference to Kogoro Akechi from Edogawa Ranpo's fiction, specifically mirroring the original's role as a celebrity detective. While other characters are scolded for mistakes, Akechi shows exclusive care only for Joker.

In Their Own Story

In Persona 5, Akechi opposes the Phantom Thieves but joins them during Sae's Palace under the code name Crow. He is revealed to be the black-masked assassin causing cognitive shutdowns under Masayoshi Shido's orders and later discloses he is Shido's illegitimate son seeking revenge for years of neglect. Like Joker, Akechi holds a "wild card" power granted by Yaldabaoth, though it failed to develop properly due to his nihilistic view of human relations. He eventually sacrifices himself to save the Phantom Thieves after learning Shido planned his death post-election. In Persona 5 Royal, he becomes playable in the third semester, aiding Joker in investigating Maruki's Palace with his true personality exposed. Maruki reveals Akechi's survival was due to Joker's wish to save him, a outcome dependent on specific choices made in his Confidant path.

Reader's Guide

Akechi serves as the Justice Arcana Confidant and is playable only during Sae's Palace in the original game. In Persona 5 Royal, he becomes fully playable in the third semester with new abilities and a dedicated interactive Confidant arc. His battle dialogue was initially recorded to be "wilder," but voice actor Sōichirō Hoshi re-recorded lines after developers felt his performance was too strong. The art team added different character portraits for Royal, including a default stern expression, to show his "true" self around Joker and the Phantom Thieves. Outside the main story, he appears in spin-offs Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight and Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth. In the stage play adaptation, Akechi is portrayed by Yoshihide Sasaki, who prepared by playing the game to understand the character's dual personalities.
