Confidant System
Forging bonds of trust to unlock unique abilities tied to the Major Arcana.
The Confidant System serves as the primary mechanic for deepening relationships between Joker and the allies he meets throughout Tokyo. Rooted in the tarot's Major Arcana, this system allows the protagonist to unlock unique abilities by spending time with specific individuals. From the mysterious cat-like guide Morgana to the track star Ryuji Sakamoto, each Confidant represents a distinct card, ranging from the Magician to the Chariot and Lovers. As trust builds, these bonds grant Joker access to new combat skills, faster travel options within the Metaverse, and tools essential for navigating Palaces created by distorted desires.

Lore & Background
Within the narrative, Confidants are defined by their specific Tarot Arcana and personal struggles. Morgana, representing the Magician Arcana, begins as a guide who wants to discover his origins and restore his true form; his bond allows Joker to craft tools for exploration. As this automatic progression advances, Morgana's Persona Zorro evolves into Mercurius at rank 7, and in Persona 5 Royal, further into Diego at rank 10. Ryuji Sakamoto represents the Chariot Arcana, a former track star whose leg was broken by Kamoshida's abuse during practice, though the incident was blamed on Ryuji's attitude; maxing this bond allows the team to instantly defeat lower-level Shadows and sees his Persona Captain Kidd evolve into Seiten Taisei at rank 7 or William at rank 10 in Royal. Ann Takamaki embodies the Lovers Arcana; her journey involves overcoming isolation and rumors regarding Kamoshida, granting negotiation skills with Shadows as her Persona Carmen evolves into Hecate at rank 7 or Célestine at rank 10. These arcs are not just stat boosts but reflections of characters like Yusuke Kitagawa, who seeks artistic truth, and Makoto Niijima, the student-council president seeking justice.
In Their Own Story
The bonds form through specific interactions driven by character needs rather than abstract gameplay. Joker encounters Morgana after freeing him from Kamoshida's Palace cell, establishing a partnership where the cat teaches the ropes of being a phantom thief while living with Joker as a domestic cat outside the Metaverse. With Ryuji, the focus shifts to healing trauma; Joker helps him rediscover his love for running and re-establish the track team he was forced to quit after Kamoshida framed him. For Ann, the turning point is learning that her best friend Shiho Suzui's suicide attempt was linked to Kamoshida, prompting her to join the Thieves and take her modeling career seriously as she improves herself for Shiho. Yusuke joins due to his passion for art and aesthetics, while Makoto, Sae Niijima's sister, and Haru Okumura, a business heiress, bring their own arcs of confronting corruption and family expectations. Even Goro Akechi, the ace detective, interacts with Joker within this framework, though their relationship is complex.
Reader's Guide
To utilize the Confidant System effectively, players must invest time with allies in Tokyo's many locations outside of school hours. Each character corresponds to a specific Major Arcana card; there are twenty-one represented characters (twenty-three in Persona 5 Royal), excluding The World which is granted later. As ranks increase, unique benefits unlock: Morgana enables crafting tools and transforms into the Morganamobile minivan for quick travel in the Metaverse; Ryuji provides instant victory against low-level Shadows; Ann facilitates negotiations with Shadows to avoid combat or gain items. Progression often mirrors character arcs, such as Morgana regaining memories of being created by Igor to guide Joker against Yaldabaoth. In Persona 5 Royal, additional evolutions occur, like Diego for Morgana and William for Ryuji. The system also extends to non-Thieves like Sae Niijima, a public prosecutor, or the Velvet Room residents Igor, Caroline, and Justine. Note that while some Confidants progress automatically (like Morgana), others require specific time slots and choices to advance.
