While initial encounters often involve fighting distorted reflections that manifest as monsters born of denial, the definitive confrontation occurs when the facade crumbles completely. This stage reveals the raw, unfiltered truth of who the person is, including aspects they have worked hardest to hide even from themselves. The danger lies in the refusal to accept this reality; if a party member rejects their Shadow in Persona 4, it can lead to a game over, and the protagonist faces a narrative risk of rejecting their true self, which is a key plot point in the bad ending. In Persona 3, the protagonist's awakening involves Orpheus, not Thanatos, and they do not confront and accept their Shadow (Thanatos) during that event.
